Tequila Unmasked
After receiving a new tequila, we became wrapped up in what all the labeling meant. Is there a tequila that is better?
What does reposado mean? Here's our quick little guide to the tequila shelf:
- The best tequila is made from 100% Blue Agave.
- An Agave plant takes 8-10 years to mature.
- There are three levels of tequila aging:
Blanco/Silver | No aging |
Gold | Same as Blanco, with caramel added for color and flavor. |
Reposado | Aged a minimum of 2 months, can be aged up to 12 months. Typical aging: 9 months |
Añejo | Aged at least 12 months, sometimes 18 months to 3 years |
As a general rule, if you will be mixing the tequila in margaritas or other mixed drinks, save your money and buy a Blanco/Silver or Gold. Note though, that the sugars added to the Gold contribute to the hangover that follows the next day. If you will be sipping the tequila, or taking shots, spend the extra money on the reposado or anejo. These will go down smoother and have more complex flavors.
