Chile is a fantastic region for wine. Wine as a tradition was introduced here by Spanish settlers and monks in the sixteenth century, many years before California came into existence. Winemaking has since become ingrained in the culture, leading Chilean winemakers to perfect their particular style of New World wine-making.
The land of Chile stretches for thousands of miles along the western coast of South America. The result: a large range of latitudes span from North to South, with a great deal of climactic variation from region to region. Winemakers are able to take advantage of this variety, for example by producing a certain grape in different climatic settings, and then blending the lot together. Chilean wine is usually refreshing and well developed. Thus, the great geographic span of the country allows winemakers to explore the character of each grape fully, combining the offspring of different winemaking regions across a vast geographic and climactic setting. The resulting quality can explain why Chile is the fifth largest exporter of wine, while its' a population is a mere 15 million.
A great portion of Chile lies in the Andes, the world's longest continental mountain range. These mountains are strikingly tall, averaging about 4000 m (12000 ft) in altitude. It should be noted that most of Chilean wines are grown below the 8000 ft mark; nevertheless Chilean wines tend to be grown at a much higher altitude than many others. The Andes mountains give Chilean wines a great deal of character, while reducing yield. It has long been observed that a mountainous climate, with it's associated cooler climate and reduced yield, can help to make the wine more expressive and flavorful.
In our experience the wine that Chile makes available for international distribution is priced very modestly. We feel that it represents a significant value, since
the quality of Chilean wine is remarkably high, when judged against it's low price.
